Burnout, Procrastination, and Research

Burnout, Procrastination, and Research

To be completely honest, I have been extremely burned out lately. Haven’t been getting much of anything done. What I have been doing is reading. Almost constantly. Something like five or six books a week or so.

I know it’s me procrastinating about things that I really should be working on. But an entirely optimistic view would be that all I’m really doing is research and honing my craft. I’m choosing to look at it that way because it puts it in a much better light.

It doesn’t take much to skew me to that viewpoint either since the advice from many authors is to do just that – read. Readers will usually unconsciously pick up on the rhythms of storytelling. Things like pacing and just plain sentence structure. Or narration style (my preferred style is close third).

I would be better able to consider it research if I was reading in the genre I write in, but at least it’s fiction.
